Solutions

Racism in Canada towards first nation people does happen much too frequently and we need to stop it. some things that we as a society can do are to not be so in the dark, what i mean about that is if we see racism to not just pretend like it didn't happen but to help stop it. Another thing we can do is band together and even though the racism does not affect us, we should think would we like to be treated the way the first nations are? To be stereotyped, to be judged, to get looked at and have people assume alcoholic or drug addict. It's simply not fair and should not happen.

Some solutions that have been suggested in the past are summarized in the article "Canada’s First Nations: A Legacy of Institutional Racism" by Clair Hutchings. She suggests :
  • That Canada recognize their title to traditional lands and resources.
  • Canada should recognize First Nations and their inherent right to self-government.
  • First Nations need greater control over their communities. An example would be the creation in 1999 of Canada’s third territory, Nunavut.
  • Support of the First Nations Policing Policy and the Aboriginal Justice Initiative.
  • Other forms of policing have emerged including the Mi’kmaq Warrior Society and the Native Youth Movement.
  • This is a picture of first nations and Vancouver RCMP working together, to stop racism.
  •  The Government should fund Native education and First Nations’ language programs, particularly in elementary schools.
